Other Craft - Cork Wreath

I love things in jars. I also love wine. So... this came about to decorate my kitchen counter!

I've been collecting wine corks for a little while now, and I hope to make a wreath one day. One like this one below from Living Savvy.

I saw one just like it in a friends house in the spring. I loved it and started saving my corks ever since. I will be sure to post my work in progress when I start making the wreath. I know it'll take a lot more corks than I have.

I was thinking about starting it when the jar got full. That shouldn't be long with how much I love my wine.

Year Of Scraps

Well, I know it hasn't been a full year, but I'm ending my year of scraps for 2012 and will start fresh and new in 2013!

Even though December isn't completely over yet. I know I wont have any more scraps. I'm working on one project only, a scarf made out of 1 skein of yarn. No scraps until the end.

I then went out and bought my suet bird feeders!

And stuffed them both full of my scrap yarn. I cannot wait until the spring when I can put these outside and watch the little birdies grab what they want for their nests.

Moss Stitch Knit Mittens

When my sister-in-law asked if I could make her a pair of mittens, I told her how I never made mittens before, but it wasn't going to stop me!

Knit and Crochet. They are two completely different types of yarn work, and I am so glad that I know how to do both. They both have their positives and negatives. Crochet does happen to be a lot faster, and as for knit, I believe there are certain items that look better knit. Mittens, happen to be one of them.

So yes, when my sister-in-law asked if I would make her a pair of mittens, I could have crocheted them. I also could have chosen a simpler pattern. But, I did not. I choose a moss stitch pattern, that the pattern writer called "Mittens To Match Hermione's Deathly Hallows Graveyard Beret". I would have tried the hat as well, but ran out of yarn. I could not find any yarn that would match the dye lot... plus I wasn't sure if my sister-in-law wanted a hat as well.

I'm going to copy the pattern here as well. I really liked these mittens, and I would hate to want to make them again, and have the pattern not be there anymore. I'm saving paper too! The one thing I am doing, is switching the pattern for the RIGHT HAND and LEFT HAND. I found that the pattern for the LEFT HAND really fit my right hand better. Strange.

You will need worsted weight yarn, Size 5 DP needles, and 2 stitch markers.
Cuff:
Cast on 44 stitches. Distribute them over DP needles, making sure each needle has an even number of stitches
Join in the round, making sure not to twist the work.
K1 P1, repeat to the end of row
Continue this pattern for 3 inches

Row 1: Knit around
Row 2 & 3: K2, P2, repeat to end of row

Row 27: *K2, P2* repeat 3 more times, remove first stitch marker. Using a yarn needle pull a piece of holding
yarn through the stitches between the markers, you will come back to these stitches later. Remove second stitch marker. Cast on 2 stitches onto the needle with your first 16 stitches. These stitches replace the original two that are now part of the thumb gusset. Continue working with the stitches beyond the second stitch marker P2, *K2, P2* repeat 5 more times. You should now have recreated a circle of 44 stitches for the hand portion.
Row 28: P2, K2, repeat to end or row
Row 29: P2, K2, repeat to end or row
Row 30: K2, P2, repeat to end of row
Row 31: K2, P2, repeat to end of row
Continue knitting in pattern until the mitten is long enough to hide your pinky finger (stretched is fine), making sure the last 2 rows are repeats of P2, K2.
Begin following instructions for Hand decrease.

stitches onto the needle with your first 4 stitches. These stitches replace the original two that are now part of the thumb gusset. Continue working with the stitches beyond the second stitch marker P2, *K2, P2* repeat 8 more times.
Continue knitting in pattern until the mitten is long enough to hide your pinky finger making sure the last 2 rows are repeats of P2, K2.
Begin following instructions for Hand decrease.

Note: When creating the thumb gusset for the left hand - there will be 16 stitches, then a place marker, a variable number of stitches, then another place marker, followed by a 26 stitches. When creating the thumb gusset for the right hand - there will be 4 stitches, then a place marker, a variable number of stitches, then another place marker, followed by a 38 stitches.

Hand Decrease:
The previous 2 rows knit should have been repeats of P2, K2. The number in parentheses is the number of stitches you should have after completing the row.
Row 1: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, *P2, K2* repeat 3 more times, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, *K2, P2* repeat 3 more times (40)
Row 2: *P2, K2* repeat 4 more times, *K2, P2* repeat 4 more times (40)
Row 3: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, *P2, K2* repeat 2 more times, P2, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, *K2, P2* repeat 2 more times, K2 (36)
Row 4: *P2, K2* repeat 8 more times (36)
Row 5: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, *P2, K2* repeat 2 more times, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, *K2, P2* repeat 2 more times (32)
Row 6: *P2, K2* repeat 3 more times, *K2, P2* repeat 3 more times (32)
Row 7: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, *P2, K2* repeat 1 more time, P2, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, *K2, P2* repeat 1 more time, K2 (28)
Row 8: *P2, K2* repeat 6 more times (28)
Row 9: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, *P2, K2* repeat 1 more time, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, *K2, P2* repeat 1 more time (24)
Row 10: *P2, K2* repeat 2 more times, *K2, P2* repeat 2 more times (24)
Bind off using Kitchener closure.

Thumb:
You should have a hole with 16 stitches on your holding yarn and an edge from the hand part of the glove. Pick up 4 stitches from the hand portion. Slip the stitches from the holding yarn as well as the picked up stitches onto DP needles. Distribute 3 of the picked up stitches on the needle from which you will begin knitting, these will be the first 3 stitches of your row. Place the last picked up stitch on the last knitting needle. This will be the last stitch of your row. Recall that when you moved the stitches to the holding yarn you had just done this with them (K1, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K1). Now you have 3+16+1. Therefore you should begin with this sequence so you continue correctly within the pattern:
Row 1: *P2, K2* repeat 4 times (20)
Row 2 & 3: *K2, P2* repeat 4 times (20)
Row 4 & 5: *P2, K2* repeat 4 times (20)
Row 6-9: Continue to knit in the round and follow the moss stitch pattern, repeating rows 2-5 (20)
Row 10-13: Continue to knit in the round and follow the moss stitch pattern, repeating rows 2-5 (20)
Row 14: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, P2, K2, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, K2, P2 (16)
Row 15: P2, K2, P2, K4, P2, K2, P2 (16)
Row 16: K2, P2, K2, P4, K2, P2, K2 (16)
Row 17: S1, P2tog, psso, P1, K2, P2, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, K2 (12)
Row 18 & 19: K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2 (12)
Row 20: S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2, S1, K2tog, psso, K1, P2 (8)
Bind off using Kitchener closure.

WIPW: Work-In-Progress Wednesday

I've been working on three different things. And honestly, none of them are for Christmas. I really should be finishing up my Christmas towels that I give to my family. They're quick though, once I put my mind to it.

My CAL scarf is the first thing I've been working on! It is a quick pattern, so it really shows you exactly how long I've been working on it. *cough*15minutes*cough. I should pick it up again as well.

The thing I have been obsessed about with the past few days are these mittens! I was so excited when I finally finished the one! I can see why a good friend of mine only made one mitten though. I knew I couldn't fall into that trap, so I made sure to start the second mitten right away.

And the final item I am working on is this scarf for my nephew. I know my mother said it's okay if it wasn't ready by Christmas.... but I would like to finish it by then. I don't see that happening though, not with the mitten taking over my whole life! I'm just so afraid i'm going to set it down and not pick it back up again. We shall see.

I am linking up with Tami's WIP, Ambassador Crochet, Yarn Along and SusanD's.

Bearded Viking Hat

I finished the bearded Viking hat! It looks so good, but man was it a pain in the butt to make. It really didn't take long, it was just tedious. Especially the beard.

Both patterns came from Ravelry. The beard pattern is a free pattern that I changed up, just a bit. I didn't like the way they did their mustache, so I made mine differently. That pattern can be found here, for anyone who is interested.

The hat pattern I ended up buying, because I could not find any free patterns that I liked. That pattern can be found here.

Magazine Subscription?

I'm thinking about getting a subscription to a Crochet Magazine on my Nook. If you could choose, which magazine subscription would you get?

Crochet Today!, Crochet World, or Crochet! ??

Year Of Scraps

I have been forgetting to post November's jar for my year of scraps! Let's see how it is this month.

Bearded Viking Hat

About a month ago my brother told me exactly what he wanted for Christmas.... a bearded viking hat. Cue me thinking "oh goodness". I debated for the longest time on if I would attempt to make one or buy one.

Seeing that the cheapest one I found was $45... and how that exceeds our spending limit. I decided to finally attempt to make it.

I spent all day today on the beard. Yes. All day! It took a skein and a quarter to make the beard. You can find the link to the pattern on Ravelry by clicking here.

Tomorrow I'll tackle the viking hat. And on Christmas i'll be sure to snap a picture of what it looks like on my brother! I hope he loves it.

CAL: Crochet-Along

The crochet along group on ravelry has decided to start up a new CAL! This one is going to be a much quicker one than the throw, but longer than a mini project. It's the Check Stitch Scarf!

Is anyone interested??

A deadline hasn't been decided yet. I like to have things finish up at the end of a month, but i'm unsure if the end of December would be too soon, especially with the holidays. What do you think?

I'm going to start it up right away! It think it might be a nice gift for a friend if I can complete it in time.

WIPW: Work-In-Progress Wednesday

It's been a few weeks. I've been a very bad blogger these past few months. I'm sorry. But that doesn't mean I haven't been crocheting! The first thing i'm working on is the towel toppers that my grandmother used to make. After Christmas last year, I went and picked up about 24 of these towels to make for the family. My grandmother always handed them out as gifts for everyone, and I said I would do that as well. I'm only about half done.

The next thing i'm working on is taking apart the crochet along blanket I was making. I decided to take it apart straight from the blanket into these squares. I have the idea in my head on what i'm going to do with them... I just can't seem to make it work. Maybe after the holidays.

More things? Of course! I get very bored working on just one project at a time. My mother bought this yarn and asked me to make a scarf for my nephew. To be honest, I have yet to find a crochet scarf pattern that I actually like that is manly for my 8 year old nephew. So, I decided to knit it. I really like this pattern, I just wish it wasn't so slow.

And last but not least, I am making an afghan for my 13 year old niece. Hence the bold colors. This is going to be a super simple quick throw that is similar to the "V" stitch throw. It has rows of "V" stitch, and rows and just plain double crochet. So it'll be different, just still quick and easy! I hope she likes it. If there's time I'm also going to make her a pair of slippers to go with it.

And that's it. I'm mainly working on the last two right now... although I should get working on more of the towel toppers. I figure I have a month! And I can usually get 4 done in a night. I have time. :)

Crochet Along

I've been working hard on my CAL project. And this past week, I've been trying to figure out what went wrong with it. It's all messed up, and twisted and I do not like it at all!

Both ends are so off, it isn't funny. I tried to fix it, but nothing works. So. I hate to say this, but i'm throwing in the towel!! It didn't sound like many people were actually doing this project anyways. I don't think any followers, and maybe only a small handful on ravelry. On November 30th I'll still showcase anyone who has finished this project, but mine will not be on there. I am so not happy with it at all. I'm going to unravel the yarn and make granny squares.

Is anyone else working on this project? What do you think so far? Has anyone run into this problem as well?

You can always check in on the ravelry page as well!

Year of Scraps!

I was late on Septembers year of scraps, and now here I am late on Octobers as well! So, how much was added this month, to be honest... not much.

Circular Ripple Blanket

It has been over a month since I last posted! I am sorry!! This time of the year I am always quite busy.

So here we are. I've only been working on two projects this past month. One is the baby blanket for my friend. I really liked the way the circular ripple turned out! But you wouldn't believe the number of people who asked what it was, and when I told them it was a blanket their first remarks were "Wow, you have a lot more to go!". My husband even thought it was a tablecloth. LOL

It's a perfect size for a car carrier, or just to snuggle the baby up in. Small so it doesn't drag everywhere, but big enough for what matters.

The pattern I used came from here. But to be honest, I didn't like it. This is how I modified it.

To Start: ch 8, sl st in 1st chain to form ring
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring, sl st to first ch-3 (12 st)

WIPW: Work-In-Progress Wednesday

Besides my crochet along items, i've been working on the circular ripple blanket for my friends baby shower. It's in less than 20 days, and i've been majorly slacking in the crocheting department! I need to get a move on!

I'm only about half way done, and the bigger it gets, the longer each round will take. I need to get myself a new audio book to listen to while i'm crocheting!

I am linking up with Tami's WIP, Ambassador Crochet, Yarn Along and SusanD's.

WIPW: Work-In-Progress Wednesday

Has it really been just about a month since my last WIPW?? Well, I guess it's because I really haven't been working on much at all. Besides my crochet along items!

I did start a round ripple blanket, it's for a friend's baby shower coming up at the end of October, so I better get working on it more! Luckily i'm ahead of the game for my CAL, that it's not going to hurt to take a mini break from that.

It's just the beginning, but it's coming along. Hopefully once I start adding the colors it'll look better. Which, I used the random stripe generator to figure out what colors and how thick my stripes will be. I think it's going to look very nice!

Year of Scraps!

I just realized that I never took a picture of my September yarn!! Does the jar look a little different? That's because it finally got too full for my little 1 quart jar and I switched it over to the 2 quart one. I just hope this 2 quart jar holds up till the end of the "year".

Crochet Along Mini

I cannot believe it's been 9 days since I last posted, and 9 days since the beginning of our Mini Crochet Along started!

I'm very happy to have gotten a few people who made this project! I think the Tic-Tac-Toe Dishcloth is super cute and I hope those who made it enjoy it!

Here's is my version of the dishcloth:

I love the pinks in Debi Y's version! As well as how she weaved in the long strips.

JulieWine from my ravelry group made a very beautiful version as well, and she too weaved in her long strips differently than mine. I think it looks very creative this way!

Thank you all for the help and feedback with my pattern! Like I had said, it is a modified version of the pattern and I did my best to alter it to best fit what I made. I kind of hurried through the alterations of the pattern, so I did make some errors, and I appreciate everyone who offered the feedback. I'm sorry for any frustrations I may have caused.

Crochet Along Mini

This Crochet Along is a mini one, because this is a very quick and easy project! It's a simple dishcloth!

This dishcloth is a modified version of Ocean Weave Crochet Dishcloth. A friend had made this, and it ended up looking more like a placemat than a dishcloth! She sent me the link and I knew I had to modify it to make it smaller. I am nicknaming my version Tic Tac Toe Dishcloth. :) It's about 9.5" by 8".

So this is our crochet along for the moment! You can check out the pattern for it here.

I'll check to see how everyone is doing in a week, and then i'll make a reveal post on the 30th of September!

Have fun everyone!! Don't forget to join the ravelry group if you're on there! I have a discussion going for the mini CAL and the regular one!

Crochet Along - Let's Begin!

Welcome to my very first crochet along! I am very excited as this is my very first CAL ever, that is hosting or participating. Are you nervous yet? Maybe after you hear what the project is...

I originally was thinking something small, something very small. A dishcloth to be more exact. Something I watched someone whip up in 30 minutes. {Which I decided to start a mini-crochet-along as well} Then, as I started searching around on pinterest, oh yes pinterest, I found a beautiful throw! Throw measures approximately 38" wide x 50" long and will use approx. 2004 yards of yarn. I know, this is not small at all! What am I thinking? To be honest, i'm thinking I needed an extra throw for a Christmas gift for my niece.

So what do you think? Are you up for the task? Well, maybe after you see what the throw looks like you might change your mind. For good, or worse.

It is called Earthbound Throw and it is by Bernat.

The pattern can be found through either link. However, I also made a printable version of the pattern that is 4 pages long. You can grab that PDF here.

A hefty CAL isn't it? I just think it's absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to see all of the different color combinations for this!

There are 5 sections of this blanket, let's make a time frame of 2 weeks per section, plus one week to gather supplies. So let's say November 30th (for now) is the current deadline to finish the throw! That's perfect timing for Christmas! Of course, the time frame is not set in stone, so don't freak out on me!

Please leave any questions or feedback in the comments here and I'll get back with you! For all of you on Ravelry, I have also started a group there for easier communication!

Let's get going!!

CAL?

I've always wanted to join in on a Crochet Along... but I can never seem to find one when they are first starting off.

So, I know I don't have many followers, but if I started one, who would be interested?

I'm not sure what the project would be, something small.

So either comment with if you are interested, or comment if you know of a CAL just starting up. Thanks!!
