This was the first pattern that I used with the cotton thread and a steel hook!
I have a very tight gauge. For the 2 1/2" ball, if your gauge is looser, you may only want to dc in ring, ch 1 - 11 times instead of 13 like my pattern calls for.

Thread: Size 10 3-ply Cotton
Hook: Steel Hook Size 6
For 2 ½” Christmas Ball
Ch 10, join with slip st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 4, (dc in ring, ch 1) 13 times; join with slip st to third ch of beginning ch-4 {14}
Round 2: Slip st in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, (ch 5, sc in next ch-1 sp) around, ch 2, dc in first sc to form last loop. {14 loops}
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same loop, 3 dc in next sc, sc in next loop, (ch 5, sc in next loop, 3 dc in next sc, sc in next loop) around, ch 2, dc in first sc to form last loop. {7 loops}
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 5, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 3 dc in next sc, (sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 3 dc in next sc) around; join with slip st to first sc.
Round 5-13: Slip st in first chs, ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 6, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 3 dc in next sc, (sc in next loop, ch 6, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 3 dc In next sc) around; join with slip st to first sc.
Fasten off.
With a piece long enough, gather loops, pull them up around neck of ornament. Tie in knot and tuck ends into ornament.
