Granny and Granny Ripples Afghan
I cannot believe it... but it's finished!!! The Granny and Granny Ripples Afghan is now finished, and in a bag ready to give away as a Christmas gift!

This is bigger than my Granny and Ripples Afghan that I made earlier this year. Where this could probably fit a double bed, and the one before was only a big lapghan.
There are 3 strips of granny squares, and I first started with 6" squares. Then attached 5 of the 6" squares together to make a strip! I had to make half grannies for the middle strip of squares, along with 4 whole grannies.
Granny and Granny Ripples Afghan
You'll need worsted weight yarn or various colors, and size H (5mm) crochet hook.
Gauge is not critical for this project.
First Granny Square Strip:
First Granny Square
To Start: ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, [ch 1, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—12 dc and 4 ch-1 sps. Fasten off.
Round 2: Join with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made); repeat from * 2 more times, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners and 1 ch-1 sp one each side between corners. Fasten off.
Round 3: Join with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * 2 more times; ch 1, join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and one 3-dc group and 2 ch-1 sps on each side between corners. Fasten off.
Round 4: Join with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps; repeat from * 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and one 3-dc group and 2 ch-1 sps on each side between corners. Fasten off.
Round 5-7: Continue in this pattern until the 7th round is completed. Fasten off.
Next Granny Square
Work same as first granny square through Round 6.
Round 7 (joining round): Join with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps; repeat from * once more, 3 dc in next corner ch-1 sp, hold WS of this square and previous square together, sl st in corresponding corner ch-1 sp of previous square, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner ch-1 sp of this square, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and one 3-dc group and 2 ch-1 sps on each side between corners. Fasten off.
Make and join more granny squares in this manner, making a strip of how many granny squares long that you'd want it.
Ripple Pattern #1
To Start: With RS one granny square strip #1 facing, join with sl st in corner ch-1 sp beginning of first full granny square, to work across top of strip from first full granny square across to half granny square.
Row 1: Ch 5, *{3dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} repeat until you reach the top corner, {3dc, ch 1, 3dc} in top corner, {3dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} repeat until you reach the bottom corner, DO NOT ch 1, 3dc in next ch 1 sp going up the next granny, ch 1; repeat from * until you have reached the end, ch 3 and sl st into corner of the last granny, turn.
You will continue working the same row pattern until desired length. If you want, you may work on both sides of the granny strip.
Your second granny square strip will not be made in a strip. You will make each individual square and attach it to the blanket one at a time. You will be using a method similar to the one in this tutorial here.
Second Granny Square Strip:
Half Granny Square
To Start: ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1 here and throughout), (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ring (corner made), ch 1, dc in ring; do not join—1 corner, and 1 ch-1 sp and 1 dc on each side of corner. Fasten off.
Row 2: Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4, ch 4, 3 dc in beginning ch-sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in last dc—1 corner, and 2 ch-1 sps, one 3-dc group, and one dc on each side of corner. Fasten off.
Row 3: Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4, ch 4, 3 dc in beginning ch-sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] twice, ch 1, dc in last dc—1 corner, and 3 ch-1 sps, two 3-dc groups, and one dc on each side of corner. Fasten off.
Row 4: Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4, ch 3, 3 dc in each ch-1 sp to corner ch-1 sp, 3 dc in corner ch-1 sp, hold WS of this half square and last square of strip together, sl st in corresponding corner ch-1 sp of last square of strip, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner ch-1 sp of this half square, 3 dc in each ch-1 sp across, dc in last dc—1 corner, and three 3-dc groups and one dc on each side of corner. Fasten off.
Row 5-6: Continue in same pattern.
Row 7: Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4, ch 3, 3 dc in each ch-1 sp to corner ch-1 sp, 3 dc in corner, CH-1 INTO PEAK OF GRANNY RIPPLE, 3 dc in same corner sp, ch-1 into ch-1 sp of granny ripple, continue this pattern until the last sp, ch-1 into corner sp of ripple, dc into corner. Fasten off.
Whole Granny Square
Fasten off.
Round 5-6: Continue in this pattern until the 7th round is completed. Fasten off.
Round 7: Join with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps, 3 dc in corner, CH-1 INTO PEAK OF GRANNY RIPPLE, 3 dc in same corner sp, ch-1 into ch-1 sp of granny ripple, continue this pattern until you no longer have anything to ch-1 into. Continue pattern of 3dc in ch-1 sps, sl st into beginning ch, Fasten off.
Ripple Pattern #2
To Start: With RS one granny square strip #2 facing, join with sl st in first dc at top of half granny square.
Row 1: ch 4, 3dc into same sp, {3dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} repeat until you reach the bottom corner, DO NOT ch 1, 3dc in next ch 1 sp going up the next granny, ch 1, {3dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} repeat until you reach the top corner, {3dc, ch 1, 3dc} in top corner; continue pattern until last ch-1 sp. {3dc, ch1, dc} into last ch-1 sp. Fasten off.
You will continue working the same row pattern until desired length.
Edging
Row 1 : With RS facing, join with sc at beginning of one long edge, sc evenly spaced across long edge (work 4 sc in the end of each row), sl st into beginning st, Fasten Off.
This style afghan is all about pattern. Once you know how to create one row, you'll be able to make a blanket with whatever pattern you would like! You can choose to have 5 or 6 rows of grannies if you wish!
Good luck!

10" Square
Who is the biggest project starter in the world!??! Well, I'm sure there are others worse than I am, but I have to be up there on the list.
I started a new afghan. It's actually a practice one, before I make the one that will really mean something special to me. I actually kind of want to make it a secret new project too... until i'm at least part way finished with it.
But, in this new afghan I do have a new square! It's a 10" square, one of the biggest I have ever made.

Isn't it beautiful!?? I really hope it looks great with the rest of the blanket once I am finished with it!
To make this 10" Square you need a size H hook.
To Start: Ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 4, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 15 times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4.
Round 3: Sl st in next ch 1 sp. Ch 1, sc in same sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp) 15 times, ch 3, sl st in beginning sc. {16 ch 3 sps}
Round 4: Sl st in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch 3 sp) 15 times, ch 3, sl st in beginning sc. {16 ch 3 sps}
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st. (3 sc in next ch 3 sp, sc in next sc) 15 times, 3 sc in last ch 3 sp, join with sl st in beginning sc. {64 sc}
Round 6: Ch 4, (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc) in same st, *(ch 2, sk next sc, hdc in next sc, {ch 2, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc}twice, ch 2, sk 3 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 2, sk next sc, {dc, ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc} in next sc.)*twice, ch 2, sk next sc, hdc in next sc, {ch 2, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc}twice, ch 2, sk 3 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 2, sk next sc, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4.
Round 7: St st in next sts until ch 2 sp in corner, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *(dc in next dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc, {2 dc in next ch 2 sp, dc in next st}4 times, 2 dc in next ch 2 sp, dc in next dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc, {2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc} in corner ch 2 sp)*twice, dc in next dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc, {2 dc in next ch 2 sp, dc in next st}4 times, 2 dc in next ch 2 sp, dc in next dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, dc in next dc, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.
Round 8: Sl st in next dc and into ch 2 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp, *(sc in back loop only of each dc across, {sc, ch 2, sc} in next ch 2 sp)*twice, sc in back loop only of each dc across, join with sl st in beginning sc.
Round 9: Sl st into corner ch 2 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp, *(ch 3, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc)8 times across, ch 3, sk 2 sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 2 sp)*twice, (ch 3, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc)8 times across, ch 3, sk 2 sc, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning sc.
Round 10: Sl st into corner ch 2 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *(3 dc in each of next 9 ch 3 sps, {2dc, ch 2, 2 dc} in corner ch 2 sp)*twice, 3 dc in each of the next 9 ch 3 sps, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.
Round 11: Sl st in next dc and into corner ch 2 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in sampe corner sp, *({ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc}15 times, ch 1, sk next dc, {2 dc, ch 2, 2dc} in cornerch 2 sp)*twice, {ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc}15 times, ch 1, sk next dc, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.
Round 12: Sc in each st and each ch 1 sp around, with 3 sc in each corner ch 2 sp, finish off.

The original inspiration came from YarnCrazy. The one she made was a 12" square, and I didn't want one that big. So I tweaked it to make it a 10" square.

Possible New Project?
I have officially finished all of my little gifts to give to my colleagues! In good time too. I have about 15 work days left until I leave my long term position.
So now, I am thinking about a new project. I have all of the yarn to start a 5 1/2 Hour Afghan, but I just haven't gotten off my butt to start that. However.... over the weekend I got my new hooks, which I LOVE! And when I was at the craft store, I found the cutest verigated yarn. It was in one of those "side" racks and it was only 1.75oz for $1. Horrid price if I was buying a lot of it.... but it was too cute to pass up! Pink, orange, grey and beige! A very cute combination. I didn't know what I'd make out of it, but I picked up one little skein. In the store I tried to match up the colors, but nothing worked. Oh well.
When I got my new hooks, I needed to make something, so I decided on just a granny square. I figured I could make a couple granny squares and maybe start an exchange on here. But after I made 2 squares, I wanted to make something more out of it. The teeny tiny skein only made 2 full squares. I then made 3 other squares with just one round of the verigated, and the rest a beige/tan color.
It then dawned on me that I have 2 skeins of an orange that is similar to the verigated, and one part skein of a pink that is similar. I'm not sure how well it'll go together, but it could be worth a try!
I then got an email, that someone commented on my grannies and ripples afghan post. It got my mind going, and thinking about that afghan and how fun it was to make. So...... what if I did another granny and ripples afghan?
They're very loud colors, but i'm sure as i'm working through it I can figure something out. I just need to go back to the store and pick up some more of those little skeins of the verigated. One little skein made 5 squares, which will be one row of squares. I figure 5 or 6 skeins is all I would need. Then fill the rest with the orange, pink and beige!
Well, I guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out! Here we go again!

Granny Squares from Friends
I started this a few months ago with a group of ladies I am with in a support group. We swapped granny squares with each other. Since then I have also grabbed a couple of squares from a lady at work, as well as another crochet blogger.
So far, this is what I have completed.
It's coming along very slowly, and it'll take me a long time to gather squares from other people before the whole blanket is complete. This is going to be an ongoing work in progress :) Probably for a long time! But don't worry, I will not post it every Wednesday, only when I've made some progress on it.

Grannies and Ripples Afghan!
Or should I really call it a lapghan? It is only made for one person to sit and cuddle up underneath. Some day I will venture into making a bigger one, but seeings that this one took me a month to make.... I can't imagine a bigger one!
But... IT'S FINISHED!!!!!! I am so happy and so excited for how this turned out!
The original pattern came from here. But modifications had to be made on it. Either my stitches were off, or I just made grannies different than they do. I just couldn't figure out for the life of me how the pattern could only go so many sts across.
I started with a row of "green grannies" in the middle. I then worked the rows off each side in a symmetrical pattern. Attached the two rows of "beige grannies", continued working on both ends until I attached a new row of "green grannies" and finished off both ends.

Grannies and Ripples Afghan
You'll need: worsted weight yarn or various colors, size H (5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle to sew together the grannies to the blanket. Gauge is not critical for this project.
Granny Square Strip:
Fasten off.
Next Granny Square
Work same as first granny square through Round 3.
Round 4 (joining round): Join with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps; repeat from * once more, 3 dc in next corner ch-1 sp, hold WS of this square and previous square together, sl st in corresponding corner ch-1 sp of previous square, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner ch-1 sp of this square, 3 dc in next 2 ch-1 sps; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and one 3-dc group and 2 ch-1 sps on each side between corners. Fasten off.
Make and join more granny squares in this manner, making a strip of how many granny squares long that you'd want it.
Ripple Pattern #1
Work on one side of the granny, then when it's at a desired length, work the same amount of rows on the other side.
To Start: With RS one granny square strip #1 facing, join with sl st in corner ch-1 sp beginning of first full granny square, to work across top of strip from first full granny square across to half granny square.
Row 1: Ch 3, dc3tog over next 2 dc, *dc in next 13 dc, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp ("peak"), dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 sts ("valley" - the next 5 sts will be 2 dc, the join between 2 squares, and the next 2 dc); repeat from * across to last slope down, dc in last 13 dc, dc3tog, dc in next dc, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc3tog, dc in next 13 dc, *5 dc in next dc, dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 dc, dc in next 13 dc; repeat from * across to last 4 sts, dc3tog over next 3 sts, dc in top of turning ch, turn.
Continue working the same row pattern until desired length. Work on both sides of this granny strip.
When you're ready to add another granny strip, work in the same fashion as the granny strip above. You'll have to add on half grannies to each end of the strip to fill voids.
Fasten off.
Once the granny strip is completed, sew the granny strip to the ripples on each end. No need to sew FL to BL, I went through all 4 loops like the first method in the video by Crochet Geek here.
Once your new granny strip is attached, you may begin adding a new ripple row.
Ripple Pattern #2
To Start: With RS one granny square strip #2 facing, join with sl st in first dc at top of half granny square.
Row 1: Ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, dc in next 13 dc, *dc5tog over next 5 sts ("valley" – the next 5 sts will be 2 dc, join between squares, and next 2 dc), dc in next 13 dc, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp ("peak"), dc in next 13 dc; repeat from * across, 3 dc in same sp, dc in last ch-1 sp, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, 3 dc in next dc, *dc in next 13 dc, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 sts; repeat from * across, 3 dc in next dc, dc in last ch-1 sp, turn.
Continue attaching rows of grannies and rows of ripples until your afghan is at a desired length.
Edging {If desired - I did not, only because I ran out of the color yarn I wanted to use, and didn't want to buy a whole skein just for the edging}
Row 1 : With RS facing, join with sc at beginning of one long edge, sc evenly spaced across long edge (work 2 sc in the end of each row), turn.

Fasten off.

Circle Gets the Square preemie baby blanket
My cousins son was born 9 weeks premature. He is such a little tiny thing and he's finally home from the hospital. I wanted to make her a blanket that would fit his current size. I knew he would be getting a lot of blankets that were way too big, but I think this one would be perfect for the little snuggles now.
I made two separate types of squares and joined them together the way I joined these together.
For the border, I added a granny style all of the way around. I ended up doing 4 rows around my squares.
The first square I made was this one below, the original pattern came from here.
Special Abbreviations
FPdc (Front Post double crochet): Yo, insert hook from
front to back to front around post of indicated st; yo and
draw up lp, [yo and draw through 2 lps on hook] twice.
To Start: Make an adjustable ring, ch 3.
Round 1: 11 dc into ring, join {12}
Round 2: Ch 3, FPdc around same dc as join, (dc in next dc, FPdc around same dc) repeat 10 more times; join {24}
Round 3: : Ch 3, dc in next st, FPdc around same FPdc, (dc in next 2 sts, FPdc around same FPdc) repeat 10 more times; join {36}
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, FPdc around same FPdc, (dc in next 3 sts, FPdc around same FPdc) repeat 10 more times; join and fasten. {48}
Round 5: sl st into any sp, ch 3, 2 dc into same sp, ch 1, 3 dc into same sp, ch 1, (sk next 4 sts, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, sk next 4 sts, 3 dc, ch 1, 3dc in same sp) around, join and fasten.
The second square I made was this one below, the original pattern came from here.
To Start: Make an adjustable ring. Ch 3
Round 1: dc into ring, ch 1, (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through two loops on hook (two loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining two loops, ch 1) 7 times, join and finish.
Round 2: sl st into ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc into same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) around, join and fasten.
Round 3: sl st into ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc into same sp, ch 1, 3 dc into same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc into next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc into same sp) around, join and finish.
Round 4: sl st into ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc into same sp, ch 1, 3 dc into same sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc into next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc into same sp) around, join and finish.

Granny Squares for Cancer
Hello my lovely followers! I know there are not many of you, but I was wondering if any of you knew of a place I could send granny squares? Then this person would turn around and make then into an afghan to kids with cancer?
Not that long ago I found Share A Square.

I fell in love with the idea! However, I found this site a few days after her last request date. Then yesterday, she sent out a message saying that she's done making the blankets for good.
I still want to do this though, I want to make squares for kids with cancer! Do you know of another site or person who is doing the same thing? I found other sites that are making blankets for other reasons, but this specific reason really touched my heart.
Please say you know of a site. Because honestly, I'm thinking of having people start sending squares to me and i'll just make the blankets!

Granny Squares
When my grandmother passed away in July of this year, I inherited all of her yarn. I knew then, to use up some of her odd sized balls and skeins, that I was going to make granny square afghans for my aunt, my uncle, and my mother.
Today. I finished the last afghan!!!! Part of me never wants to make another granny square again! LOL
They're very simple! I didn't want to go too overboard with designs and such... especially since I was making 3 of them by Christmas.
I never wanted to make granny square afghans in the past, because I didn't like the idea of sewing them together. I was always afraid I was going to mess them up somehow. That was, until I found a tutorial on how to crochet them together. I will never make a granny square a different way! Let me show you.
We're going to attach this granny square to our blanket.
Start off by attaching your color to the corner of the square. Working just like you would be if adding a new color to your square.
Finish up the first side. When you get to the corner, only work in one set of 3dc. Do NOT ch 1 yet.
The ch 1 will be joined in through the corner of the other square that you want to join it to.
Then make 3 dc into the square that you are joining.
It should look like this. :)
Now, ch 1 through the ch 1 space on the square you are joining into.
Then work 3 dc into ch 1 space of the square you are joining.
Like before, ch 1 into the ch 1 space on the opposite square.
And again, like before, 3 dc into the ch 1 space on your original square.
Ch 1 through the opposite square.
Then ch 3 into your corner.
When you get to the corner. You want to join with your ch 1 in the square that is kitty corner from your square that you are joining. If this is your first row, join with the corner of the square that you have been joining into.
Now make 3 dc into the corner space to make your turn.
Finish off this side, just as you had done before. Leaving 3 dc in the corner, remember to not ch 1 yet.
Ch 1 through the corner of the square right next door.
Make your 3 dc in the corner again to make your turn.
And finish off the side normally! Cut your yarn and tuck in the ends. Then you can begin on joining the next square to your afghan!
